My team has been in Guatemala for 2 weeks now. Most of that time has been spent in quarantine. On 1/21, I tested positive for COVID. Consequently, that meant that I had to quarantine separately from my team. I don’t want to sugarcoat anything. This has been hard, a lot harder than I anticipated. I didn’t realize the difference that a simple hug can make when you’re feeling discouraged until I couldn’t have it.
Through my time, I have compiled a list of things you should do if someone is quarantined. It should be noted that this list comes from my own personal experience only. Everyone is different, and will need different things.
What to do if someone is quarantined:
1. Pray with them and for them. Prayer is so powerful, and can really make all the difference. Especially if our situation is less than ideal.
2. Give them words of encouragement. It is hard to be physically away from the people you love (both your team and your family). The next best thing you can do to help them is to encourage them.
3. Check ins. Not just physical check ins, but emotional, mental, and spiritual.
4. Talk with them. Doing physical acts of service is a great way to show someone you love them. But sometimes talking with someone will help them feel seen.
5. Ask them what they need. They may not have an answer, and that’s okay.
6. Because they may not be able to do a lot of things for themselves, such as cook or clean, they may start to feel like a burden on others. Let them know that they are not a burden. Tell them that they are missed. Tell them you love them. Tell them this often.
7. Include them in things. Tell them jokes or funny stories. Anything to help them feel as though they are included.
Before I end this blog, I want to extend my love to my team: Lauren, Katy, Paiton, Janice, and my squad leader Josiah. You have all been beyond a blessing to me. I appreciate every single one of you more than words can say. Thank you for being there for me, and for loving me through this. I love you all dearly, and care for you all immensely. You have shown me Jesus through all of this. Thank you.
Oh, Zim! You are such an encouragement. The way you’re so real about this hardship, and how you still bring Kingdom to us (your team) and the world… I am just so honored to be on the same team as you. This list is excellent, by the way!!!!!!!
I love you!!
Hannah, this is great! I particularly like #6. How thoughtful to use what you’ve been through to help others.
I believe the ties between you and your teammates will be stronger than ever.
Love this! Probably should’ve read before Annie and Kristin were free lol But well said and helpful insight. So happy you’re healthy!
